Before algorithms decided what you should read, discovery was personal. Somebody handed you a book and said “read this.” You passed it to your friend. Your friend passed it to hers. That's how the best fiction traveled — hand to hand, word of mouth, reader to reader.

TheBacklist exists to protect that tradition.

We are an independent fiction archive — not a bookstore, not a social network, not a review platform. We catalog, curate, and celebrate the books that hold up. The ones readers are still talking about years after the release day hype is gone. Every genre. Every voice. Every era from 1995 to the present.

Our collection is built three ways: reader nominations, editorial selection, and author submissions. Every book in the archive earned its place. We don't sell placement. We don't accept ads. We don't let algorithms decide what gets seen.

The Wall of Fame is our reader-driven institution — seasonal votes that permanently induct the fiction that mattered most. No industry panel. No committee of critics. Just readers choosing the books that changed them.
